Recent World War II history is apparent on few of islands of Kiribati particularly Tarawa, Makin (now called Butaritari) and Abemama in the Gilbert group, and Banaba Ocean Island. The Gilbert Atolls did not feel the impact of World War II until the Japanese entered the Pacific
